Free gig showcases talent of 'new Hendrix'
Detroit guitarist and his band climaxes UK tour at Wheatsheaf
An American guitarist in the Jimi Hendrix mould ends a two-month UK tour on Friday (April 11) up the road in Leighton Buzzard.
P-A-U-L (otherwise known as Paul Andrew Ulysses Lamb, from Detroit) appears with his band The Harper Woods Heroes at The Wheatsheaf in North Street at 8pm for a free two-set gig.
The Hendrix connection started when his father bought him an album by the late, great guitarist for his birthday. He also absorbed the music of artists such as Johnny Winter and Johnny Cash.
A self-taught guitarist who has now been performing for some 15 years, P-A-U-L delivers blues-rock that's a crossbreed of deep-seeded grooves, lightning riffs, and soulful melodies.
He will be showcasing his new album Hangin' On For Dear Life (EE Records) – a fascinating collection of progressive rock-blues tracks that packs real punch on heavy numbers or sweet, delicate muses on more laid-back songs, all suffused with boldly imaginative arrangements and a whole array of pyrotechnic, Hendrix-like effects.
