"I'M BORED, there's nothing to do" is a familar cry in the school holidays. But the Observer is setting out to show that it really isn't true – there are lots of interesting, healthy and enjoyable things to do in and around the Leighton area, and for all age groups too.
The town's library coffee lounge was packed for the launch of the Leighton Buzzard Observer's Give It A Go! Campaign.

Every three months a Give It a Go! booklet will be published inside every copy of the LBO, giving loads of opportunities for our readers to play a new sport or try a new activity. Issue 1 is out on April 8.

The LBO, along with Team Beds and Luton, invited the town's clubs, recreational groups and sporting organisations to the information evening to see how they can get involved and gain some free advertising. Thirty six different groups attended and ten have signed up already!

If you missed Monday's meeting it's not too late to get your group involved. Contact Laura at Team Beds and Luton on 01582 813764 or email laura@teambedsandluton.co.uk, or phone Nicki Atkinson at the LBO on (01525) 858411, email nicki.atkinson@lbobserver.co.uk for more information.

Our free booklet will contain information about a variety of local sports activities and special offer coupons giving readers an opportunity to try out a range of sporting and other hobbies free or at discount rates.

Subjects out there for you try out could range from stamp collecting to bird watching or learning to play an instrument. The list is potentially vast.

In the meantime, how about joining in a free fun programme for kids to become fitter, healthier and happier at Vandyke Upper School Specialist Sports College!

If you have children aged seven to 13 and are worried they might be unfit or overweight, then join the MEND Programme.

This gets kids healthy and fit in only 10 weeks – and helps them stay that way. MEND stands for (M)ind, (E)xercise and (N)utrition… Do-it! – with an emphasis on practical, fun learning. The programme is designed to deliver sustained improvements in families, their fitness levels and overall health.

The Programme consists of 18 sessions (twice a week for 2 hours per session).

Highlights include:

* Weekly games and activities for children.

* Learning that being active can be a lot of fun!

* Fun, interactive discussions that will teach you easy, effective ways to improve your child's behaviour and improve his or her self-confidence.

* Practical demonstrations, games and tips about healthy foods, label reading and portion sizes.

Although there is no cost to attend the programme, children will need to qualify based on their age, weight and health. Places on the first programme, which starts at Vandyke Upper School on April 22 are limited, so ring today!

Call Vandyke's Sports College office on (01525) 636722 to see whether your child qualifies and to get more details on how to register for the MEND Programme.
