African adventure is an inspiration
A party from Leighton’s Vandyke Upper School travelled to South Africa as part of the International Inspirations Programme
Vandyke has been working on this joint project with two other Bedfordshire schools (Redborne Upper and Biddenham Upper) for the last three years, with each of the schools partnered with a South African school – all based within the Western Cape area.
Vandyke has joined with Phakama Secondary School, a Township School in the Cape Flats area of Cape Town.
During the visit last month, staff and students visited Phakama and worked on developing sports leadership, sports events management, as well as sharing some physical science teaching practices.
Vandyke’s Stewart Seymour, of Leighton Linslade School Sport Partnership, said: “The experience on a personal level was extremely rewarding and motivating, seeing people living in real poverty but making the most of life and seeking education and sport as an opportunity to escape and improve their lives.”
In late September, six teachers from the three South African schools will be coming to Bedfordshire to learn more and share areas of good practice from both sides. Stuart is pictured with students at Phakama.
