Open - the little green nappy shop in Ivinghoe
'Earthlets' spread idea
NEW mums and dads worried about what effect disposable nappies could be having on the environment may have an answer to their predicament.
The first real nappy shop in Buckinghamshire has been officially opened by Councillor Avril Davis in Ivinghoe.
Little Green Earthlets can be found at 17 High Street, Ivinghoe, and the Waste Partnership for Buckinghamshire sent along its lead spokesman, David Carroll, to welcome the thriving real nappy enterprise to the area.
The shop could also be of use to new parents in Leighton and Linslade as it is only a short drive away.
Owners Michelle and Mike Riley will be offering a variety of demonstration nappies and have library kits of real nappies, where parents can borrow nappies, on payment of a small cash deposit, to try out at home for free.
The couple emphasise that you don't have to be an "eco-warrior" to use real nappies – every family can benefit.
"The information is totally free and the nappies won't cost the earth either!" they said.
The shop is open Monday to Friday, from 9am to 4pm, for a casual drop in session and a no-obligation demonstration of products. There is also a monthly drop in session in the evening for dads and mums using real nappies.
To support parents even more, Little Green Earthlets will be open by appointment at other times.
Michelle Riley said: "We started using real nappies when our twins Samuel and Mia were born and we had very little income! It was the lack of income that led us to seek out reliable washable nappies for our babies and with two in nappies, the cost was exorbitant. We wanted real nappies to be simple, straightforward and manageable.
"The environmental issues regarding disposables had not yet become the headline news it often is today. However once we started using them we were so pleased that we have been spreading the word ever since!"
Bucks waste committee chairman, Councillor Martin Tett, said: "It's great to have Little Green Earthlets open in the county. This will support Buckinghamshire's real nappy initiative which aims to provide information and support to parents, allowing them to make an informed decision.
