‘Going vegan was the best decision I ever made!’

November, National Vegan Month

Leighton resident and housewife Sarah Ward says going vegan was the best decision she has ever made.

Sarah, 37, of Bideford Green, has been a vegetarian since she was 13 but six years ago she discovered that in terms of suffering, the diary industry is one of the worst offenders.

She said: “Going vegan really was the only way to ease my conscience. I had been vegetarian since I was 13 years old because I realised there was a lot of suffering involved with eating meat.”

Sarah is just one of the hundreds of thousands of people throughout the UK who has chosen to follow a vegan diet and will be celebrating that compassionate choice this November, which has been designated National Vegan Month – an annual initiative pioneered by national campaign group Animal Aid since 2007.

As part of the initiative, Animal Aid has produced a new, free, Vegan Guide and a special vegan recipes website.

Sarah added: “My health is great, my diet is more varied than ever and – best of all – I am much happier knowing that my food choices have not caused animals to suffer.

“I am also very proud of my children who are all so compassionate and kind, as I think being vegetarian or vegan fosters that.”

Animal Aid’s Vegan Month Coordinator Kelly Slade said: “As a vegan, you can still have all of your favourite meals and treats.

“Just about every food made from dairy products or eggs has a cruelty-free alternative, and with those products easily available in high street shops and supermarkets, there has never been a better time to give it a go.”

Animal Aid’s new Vegan Guide is ideal for anyone who, like Sarah, would like to eat more compassionately.

It is beautifully illustrated with a mouth-watering chocolate cake on the cover and contains simple vegan recipes including some of your favourite meals: lasagne, quiche, sausage and bean casserole and, of course, some indulgent desserts.

It is available free of charge from www.govegan.org.uk or by calling 01732 364546. Animal Aid has also created a special recipe website (www.veganrecipes.org.uk) that offers three-weeks’ worth of breakfast, lunch and dinner ideas.

Sarah's story is similar to mine. I was a long time vegetarian too--19 years before going vegan 6.5 years ago. It was the best decision I have ever made too.
