Girls celebrate centenary year

Wing 'rocked' on Saturday last week when 2,500 members of Girlguiding Buckinghamshire attended the launch of their centenary celebrations at the village's Cottesloe School.

It is 100 years since a group of girls invaded the Crystal Palace Scout Rally and asked Lord Robert Baden-Powell to let them join the scouts.

He asked his sister Agnes to start a girl's version and the girl guides was started in 1910.

The fun at Cottesloe saw rainbows, brownies, guides, rangers, young leaders, and adult leaders enjoying activities such as rock climbing, archery and challenge bikes as well as learning circus skills, how to play in a steel band and attending a pop star academy.

There were sheepdog and falconry displays, rides on a steam engine and entertainment by Mr Panda and Rainbow Bigbottom.

After a mass parachute games session, the disco started and everyone partied until the evening.

Assistant county commissioner Judy Freeman said: "The launch party is the first of many events planned during the centenary year so the girls have a great year of festivities to look forward to."
