Help charity to make Headway as a partner

HEADWAY, the Luton charity that helps people with brain injuries, is looking for partners prepared to share their new premises in Alma Street.
And during National Action for Brain Injury Week (May 14 - 20), chief executive Grahame Atkins stressed that whoever joins them in the project would have to be sympathetic to the needs of Headway’s clients.
He said: “We were based at Cardiff Road for 12 years but were running out of room.
“We’ve been looking for somewhere to move that we could perhaps purchase.
“We wanted to stay in the town centre but with the recession kicking in and finances being restricted, we’ve had to be a bit more conservative in our development plans.
“These premises became available at a reasonable rent and we moved in after Easter.
“I’m hoping we can find someone who will come in with us.
“We’ve got four floors and although it’s wonderful to have so much space we don’t need it all.”
Headway has a staff of eight with 12 volunteers and 80 clients.
The charity also operates part-time from the Grovebury Road Scout Hall in Leighton Buzzard.
The charity was in the news last week when one of its volunteers, Angie Murray, was named Volunteer of the Year.
She was also recognised for Exceptional Achievement at an awards ceremony organised by Volunteer Centre Luton, an offshoot of Voluntary Action Luton.
Angie, 27, of Biscot, was left with a brain injury after being hit by car as a toddler.
And in spite of being confined to a wheelchair, she has devoted her life to helping others – in between taking a degree in psychology and criminal behaviour.
The effects of brain injury can have wide ranging repercussions.
A Headway spokesman said: “Brain injury doesn’t just affect individuals, it can transform the lives of entire families.
“Depending on the severity of the injury, relatives may have to consider becoming full or part-time carers.”
