Keeping you posted following changes to delivery service

Changes to the postal delivery service in Leighton-Linslade have caused delays and late-afternoon deliveries, leaving people feeling outraged and branding the post as a ‘joke’.

Kay Bishop, 65, of Stoke Road, claims that postmen who are delivering within a mile of Leighton Buzzard’s post office will have to push a trolley, but those who are a mile out will now have to share a van.

She said: “We have a new postman now and our mail could arrive any time of the day. We initially queried it because we wondered what was going on as we didn’t get any mail for three or four days, so we knew there had been a change because it was so different from normal. Perhaps it will improve. I am not complaining about the postman, it is not his fault. They can’t get the work done in time.”

LBO readers have got in touch on Facebook and Twitter to voice their concerns over the changes that seem to have been implemented during August after people were alerted to the changes in a letter.

Sharon Magnan-Housden said: “Yes, just got my post at 12.35 it’s a joke. Whatever happened to the early morning postie? The mail always use to be on the door mat when you got up.”

Jackie Farrell is worried about her personal details going missing amid the delivery shake-up. She said: “There is no first class post any more, I never use first class stamps as the post gets to there in the same timeframe as second class. My own deliveries are always after 3pm.

“I dont like the new scheme for leaving your post with a neighbour if you are not in and the post cannot be put through the letterbox. I am worried that bank details and information could go astray, or for that matter any person information e.g. hospital letters and apppointments.”

Holly Anne Mckean said: “I have had three deliveries in the past two weeks and they were late afternoon.”

Chloé Sharp said: “What a joke. I got a recorded delivery letter just posted through my door – is that normal?”

Marian Woollard said: “Lost my normal postman this week and post seems to come when it thinks it will - any time from 9.25am to 3.15pm.”

Although Richard Owen told the LBO that he believes post is a thing of the past. He said: “No issues in my part of Billington Park, delivery always between 11am and 2pm Do most of my work and bill paying by internet. Post does not have the importance it did. The excuse ‘cheque in the post’ is a thing of the past.”

Royal Mail spokesman, Nick Martens, said: “We have recently made changes to our local delivery operations in Leighton Buzzard as part of the ongoing modernisation of our business.

“These changes are essential to respond changes in the postal market, to safeguard the future of the service and place the company on a viable and sustainable footing. These changes will require a period of adjustment for our staff.

“However, we are doing everything possible to maintain a high level of service that our customers expect and deserve from Royal Mail.”
