Let battlements commence

Work costing £500,000 will begin on the north transept at Leighton’s All Saints Church in October.

In 1999 a survey found the church, which has stood since 1277, required urgent restoration due to its old age and weathering.

Since then, £1.5million has been raised by local people to support the church’s restoration.

The battlements around the north transept have developed an inward lean and will be secured to preserve the Samaritan Room. The walls will also have to be reduced by 6ft to 8ft on either side.

Terry Warburton, chairman of the fabric committee and director of All Saints Preservation Trust, said: “It’s been really hard work. When we started, we didn’t think it would take this long. A huge amount of work has gone into it, but when it’s done, it’ll be the finest medieval church in Leighton Buzzard.”

Access to the church will not be affected by the work and the cafe will remain open.
