The build-up to Oxjam - Leighton’s biggest music event -begins this weekend, with a series of pre-festival gigs taking place across town.

On Saturday the New School of Music opens its doors at Brooklands Middle School, offering budding musicians a look around.

In the evening, jazz and rock ‘n’ roll trio John Cameron Three feature in a gig at Slapton Village Hall, with support from Kersten Luts, Jess Harvey, and Julian Mann.

The Linsdale Singers, conducted by Dennis Pim with Richard Watts on the organ, give a choral recital at St Barnabas Church, Linslade, at 4pm on Sunday. Tickets on 01525 376572 or on the door. On Wednesday school children make their contribution with an instrumental concert of solos, duets, and ensembles at Leighton Middle School from 7pm while the Top Bell in Market Square hosts its regular Open Mic Night.

The festival proper – which boasts a programme of 32 different musical events - kicks off on March 8 with the Oxjam Band Sessions, featuring Huggy Flares and Isabelle, at the Wheatsheaf in North Street.

Oxjam favourite–Jazz by Candlight at the Hockcliffe Street Baptist Church, featuring James Pearson and the Ronnie Scott’s House Trio is back. Tickets from CocoaBerry, in Hockliffe Street.
