HEAVY rain on St George’s Day washed out the Scouts traditional parade in Leighton town centre for the first time in living memory but the service, in All Saints Church, still attracted a congregation of more than 600 young people and adults.

Led by Father Paul Niemic and district commissioner Andrew Goddon, the Scouts renewed their promise. After the service 17 young people and their leaders were also rewarded for the work they have done in the district.

Chief among these was Explorer Scout Ed Goddard who received his Queen Scout Award after taking part in a range of challenges. He will later join hundreds of other Queen’s Scouts at Windsor where he will meet The Queen and Chief Scout Bear Grylls.

Other presentations included: Beaver Scouts Charlie Gaskin, Daniel Wright, Benjamin Lucas, Liam McKean and Robert Kenny who received their Chief Scout Bronze Award; Cub Scouts Brendon Cummins, Ryan Smith and Joshua Gale who received their Chief Scout Silver award; and Scouts James Lakins, Jamie Wright, Henry Fowler, Simon Jarratt and Lily Williams who received their Chief Scout Gold Award.

District secretary Gill Rowland received an Award of Merit and district appointments secretary Catherine Roots received a Bar to the Award for Merit for their outstanding contribution to the work of the district over the years.

Long Service awards went to Lynda Goodall and Richard Coleman (five Years) and Matthew Slade-Pedrick (25 Years).
