Oxjam in Leighton kicks off on Friday

Oxjam, Leighton’s biggest music event, officially launches three weeks of fun and fund-raising this Friday.

The festival, which raises thousands of pounds each
year for Oxfam, will see entertainers appearing on the town’s streets, in pubs, schools, halls and even people’s living rooms and the music will be as eclectic as the choice of venue with every genre catered for.

Some eager-to-perform musicians have already jumped the gun by holding pre-festival gigs but the event proper is launched on Friday with a triple whammy of concerts.

The Wheatsheaf (North Street), home of rock in Leighton, launches the Oxjam Band Sessions from 9pm.

Isabelle and Huggy Flares kick off.

Fronted by Letty Grover, Isabelle is a six-piece band that will have the audience up on their feet and dancing.

Huggy Flares is a soul, funk and disco band (complete with big wigs) that will be laying down some grooves that will take you back to a golden age of pop.

The Ashwell Arms (Ashwell Street) has a folk session starting at 8.30pm that is open to all musicians and singers.

And Bedford Town Concert Brass Band, plus choir, will be raising the roof at St Mary’s Church, Eaton Bray from 7.30pm.

Saturday sees the town’s High Street the centre of attention with six hours of live music at the bottom end of the road starting at 10am.

John Wearmouth is giving an organ recital at All Saint’s Church from 4pm and a covers band, Retroflections, take up residence in The Crown (North Street) from 8pm-11pm.

There’s a cheese & wine with entertainment at the Raven Theatre, Cedars on Sunday and a mini-band concert by Leighton-Linslade Concert Band, Trinity Methodist Church 8pm.
