Oscar Wilde's Earnest at The Court Theatre
Writer's classic comedy of manners comes to the venue this week.
The Prospect Theatre Group is hoping that audiences at The Court Theatre, Tring, will be wild about Oscar Wilde's last play The Importance of Being Earnest,A Trivial Comedy for Serious People.
Well known for the formidable character of Lady Bracknell, immortalised by Edith Evans on film, who utters the famous line, 'A handbag!' this play bubbles with wit and humour.
Four young lovers have to overcome the objections of Gwendolen's mother, Lady Bracknell, and Cecily's guardian, John Worthing, if they are to marry their sweethearts. Meanwhile the prim and not always so proper Miss Prism does her best to catch the unworldy Canon Chasuble.
There is mystery - just who are the parents of Jack Worthing and exactly what is his name? - and many misunderstandings before all the lovers are happily united andthe snobbish, fortune-seeking Lady Bracknell reveals her true colours.
The Importance of Being Earnest runs from Wednesday (Oct 21) until Saturday. For tickets contact the box office 01442 823130 or www.courttheatre.co.uk
