See Me Feel Me at The Court Theatre
The Pinball Wizard visits for the ultimate rock opera.
TOMMY, was one of those big iconic rock musicals that typifed the late 1960s. Pete Townshend's memorable score, that image of the Pinball Wizard and the giant lurex boots. Who can forget it ?
Now it's being performed at The Court Theatre and it's a must for fans.
Tommy is about the perils of celebrity, the power of music and the foolishness of seeking a messiah rather than being true to ourselves. But above all it is about great rock songs .
Tommy Walker is a war baby and has never met his father, who was reported as missing in action. His mother has a new lover and their life settles down until his father reappears four years later.
Mr Walker kills his wife's lover and Tommy witnesses this event. To keep Tommy quiet about the incident, his parents launch a verbal assault on him, telling him that he didn't see anything or hear anything.
As a result, Tommy retreats into a deaf, dumb and blind world. Tommy's parents try various treatments to get their child back to normal.
Tommy is sexually and physically abused by members of his extended family and he becomes more and more cut off from the real world.
Townshend came up with pinball as an escape for Tommy, something he can play 'by sense of smell', and at which he was unbeatable. When his mother accidentally finds a way to break him out of his captivity, Tommy becomes a celebrity and messiah.
He created Tommy in 1969, with the help of Kit Lambert, Keith Moon and John Entwhistle as a concept album and The Who never had thoughts of turning it into a stage production.
Instead they performed the album as a live rock concert. It was the very first rock opera and to this day is still one of the best.
In 1975 director Ken Russell made a film version starring Oliver Reed, Jack Nicholson, Elton John , Tina Turner, Anne Margaret and Roger Daltrey.
The musical version of The Who's Tommy has become a worldwide sensation featuring great rock classics like Pinball Wizard, See Me Feel Me, We're Not Gonna Take It, and The Acid Queen .
The Court Theatre's production features champion dancer and West End performer Kane Ricca
Kane recently was on Sky1's Got To Dance. He has also just finished filming a new comedy series for Nickelodeon to be released in October.
Tommy runs from June 22-26, and includes a Saturday matinee.
