The King and I dances into the Vandyke Theatre, Leighton

Aspiring drama student Adam Smart takes lead role in musical classic this week.

MORE than 80 young performers from The Leighton Buzzard Mini Theatre and Leighton Buzzard Children's Theatre youth section will be getting to know you when they take to the stage this week to bring alive the musical production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I.

The production, at the Vandyke Upper School Theatre, is in aid of The Laura Crane Youth Cancer Trust, and includes showstopping numbers like Shall we Dance and Something Wonderful.

The group has been rehearsing since September and includes performers aged 4-18.

The King is played by 17-year-old Adam Smart from Leighton. Adam has been with the theatre company for nine years and hopes to go to drama school after he finishes his A levels.

The story revolves around the king, his children and wives and Anna, an English schoolteacher played by 16-year-old Emer Downey from Linslade, who goes to Siam to teach the King's children.

Anna, alongside her son, Louis, played by 12-year-old Tommy Scudamore from Milton Keynes, and Prince Chulalonghorn ( Linslade Middle student Karl Goodwin), teaches the King and his numerous children Western ways.

The children's chorus march triumphantly in the March of the Siamese Children and raise the roof with their finale of "Getting to Know You".

Directed by Sally Allsopp and Bridget Whittaker the production promises colour, romance, sadness and fun.

The King and I is running on Friday (Dec 10) at 7pm and Saturday at 2pm and 7pm.Tickets are available from sally@lbct.org or 01525237469.
