*THE cast for the much anticipated National Theatre production of Alan Bennett's latest triumph, The Habit of Art, which comes to Milton Keynes Theatre this autumn, has been announced.

Award-winning actor Desmond Barrit, who appeared at MKT in Bennett's The History Boys, is playing poet WH Auden against National favourite Malcolm Sinclair as composer Benjamin Britten.

Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, Death in Venice, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend, WH Auden.

During this imagined meeting, their first for 25 years, they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station.

It looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men, and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration, and on persisting when all passion's spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.

Desmond Barrit is a Laurence Olivier Award-winning actor who has starred in productions by the Royal Shakespeare Company, Chichester Festival Theatre and the National Theatre.

Roles have included Hector in The History Boys on tour, at the Lyttelton and in the West End, The Wizard in Wicked and Bottom in the Glyndebourne Festival Opera's production of The Fairy Queen.
