DNA leads to new Dennis Kelly thriller

DNA.

DNA.

DENNIS Kelly’s compelling thriller DNA comes to Watford Palace Theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. DNA follows the story of a group of teenagers who try to cover their tracks after making the biggest mistake of their lives.

Their temporary harmony soon begins to unravel with dire consequences for all involved. Relationships break down, innocent people are punished and, in a further twist, all may not quite as it seems.

The play is set to ask its audience questions including how far would you go to hide the truth? Would you destroy someone’s life to save your own, and protect your friends? And when does a lie matter more than the truth?

The story, which was first performed at the National Theatre in 2008, has recently become a core set-text on the GCSE English syllabus, studied by up to 400,000 students a year.

The notes to the special edition have been written by Anthony Banks, the associate director of the National Theatre Discover Programme. Anthony directs this new Hull Truck production which features a cutting-edge design and soundtrack, making it a thrilling introduction to live theatre.

Hull Truck Theatre has assembled an excellent cast of up-and-coming talent for this production including James Alexandrou (Martin Fowler in EastEnders, Romeo and Juliet, Globe Theatre), Emily Butterfield (Treasure Island, The Canterbury Tales), Leah Brotherhead (The Kitchen Sink, Bush Theatre), Rhys Jennings (The Rivals, BBC Radio Drama Company), Daniel Francis–Swaby (Our Town, Vernon God Little), Elexi Walker (The Vagina Monologues, To Kill A Mockingbird, York Theatre Royal) and George Brockbanks (Dunsinane, National Theatre of Scotland/RSC). Actors Tom Clegg and Daniel Francis-Swaby are making their professional debuts.

DNA is written by Dennis Kelly whose work has featured on both the stage and screen, and has been translated into 35 languages around the world. Dennis recently has received critical acclaim for writing The Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Roald Dahl’s Olivier Award winning Matilda The Musical.
