Grove celebrates birthday with variety

IT’s hard to imagine that The Grove Theatre celebrates its fifth birthday this week. On April 21, 2007, larger-than-life actor Brian Blessed gave the £16m venue, the most ambitious ever built in the county, his seal of approval by hosting a star-studded gala.

Since then more thousands of people have visited the venue, the only professional theatre in Bedfordshire and one which boasts state-of-the-art facilities, to watch films, musicals, plays, and variety acts.

This week it launches its summer season and it’s clear that The Grove is continuing with its remit to provide something for everyone.

The venue courts controversy by featuring the shocking and thought-provoking award-winning drama, Equus, and the return of the outrageously funny, and occasionally sexually suggestive, musical Avenue Q

It rolls out its big screen and digital sound for movie blockbusters The Hunger Games, Wrath of the Titans, American Pie: The Reunion, Mirror Mirror and Men in Black 3.

Ellen Kent Productions return with Verdi’s La Traviata and Madama Butterfly in late April and, for music lovers, Cool Britannia, the ultimate Brit Rock experience, rolls up to the Grove in June followed by The Billy Fury Years, The Johnny Cash Roadshow and The Ragdolls Tribute to the Jersey Boys.

One treat for cricket fans is the return of Blowers, Henry Blofeld, who is being joined for a night of anecdotal fun (June 6) by Test Match Special colleague Peter Baxter.

You can now select your own seats online, where available, on the Grove Theatre’s website and there are also plans to revamp the theatre’s website.

Claire McFauld, sales and marketing manager said: “We would like to say thank-you to everyone who has been a part of the Grove Theatre in its first five years of life and hope that you have enjoyed your experiences here. We look forward to our future and the future of Central Bedfordshire being incredibly bright.”
