BNP fury at cancellation
Right-wing extremists have hit out at a move by Tory MP Andrew Selous to scrap a controversial meeting of the British National Party that was due to be held at Leighton's Royal British Legion Club tomorrow night.

Mr Selous, MP for South West Beds, took action after being swamped by complaints from old soldiers who were horrified that their premises were to be used for a political rally.

The local branch of the BNP had hoodwinked the club's secretary Eileen Johnson by booking the West Street Hall under the name British Heritage.

It wasn't until yesterday (Monday) that Mr Selous, a member of the club, discovered the real identity of the group, and stepped in to ask the charity to cancel the date.

Mrs Johnson said: "The hall was booked under a lady's name. I knew it was a political group but not that it was the BNP.

"As soon as I heard we cancelled them. We don't want those sort of people here. Our members wouldn't be at all happy."

In recent months the party has been actively campaigning and recruiting in Leighton-Linslade and the surrounding villages. The meeting on Wednesday night was to introduce three prospective parliamentary candidates to local people.

Mr Selous said: "The British Legion were tricked into taking the booking and I'm worried that people will still turn up thinking the meeting's on.

"I have had complaints from people who fought fascism in the Second World War and the British Legion isn't prepared to give fascism promotion in any way.

"I recognise that we live in a free society and we are entitled to free speech but the BNP is not a main stream party and they hold extreme views.

"A BNP meeting in the Royal British Legion Club is not something we want in this town."

Shelly Rose, who was organising the meeting, was furious at Mr Selous' intervention and said that a meeting would still be held.

"It is absolutely outrageous. It is Andrew Selous who is acting like a fascist. He won't allow anyone else express their opinions.

"I'm really angry about this. Make no mistake we will have our meeting but we'll hold it elsewhere.

"This was going to be a low key meeting. There was nothing mysterious or sinister about it. We were going to be discussing the up and coming general election and have three prospective candidates address the meeting.

"It's Mr Selous who is being heavy-handed about this.

"It is perfectly fitting for us to hold a meeting in the British Legion.

"We are the only party opposed to the Iraqi/Afghanistan war and the only party that's patriotic and standing up for our soldiers."

A spokesman for the BNP's national headquarters, slammed the MP's intervention as "undemocratic".

He said: "We are a recognised political party with elected representatives but in some areas we are forced to book venues under an assumed name because of local reaction. In other areas we are completely open and up front about it and accepted.

"The reaction of certain people is not our fault. It's unfair and undemocratic to ban our meetings.

"Many of our members are ex-servicemen and the British Legion should be more patriotic and less political."

By tring to stifle citizens rights to freely assemble and to free speech I think this Tory MP should take a long hard look in the mirror so he is better able to spot a fascist in future. A lot of BNP members are also ex-servicemen and have seen active service but unlike Mr Selous they atually know what a fascist looks like.I hope too that come the general election the good people of Bedfordshire decide they don't want his "sort of people" representing them in Westminster.

Had Shelly Rose perhaps been a tad more forthcoming and less inclined to hide the real purpose of the booking, Mr Selous might not have been called upon. The BNP has only itself to blame for the way it is viewed. It thrives on division and like all good bottom-feeders depends on encouraging a sense of victimisation to further its aims.

Further a fairly recent past history of attempting to hijack the good name of the British Forces is hardly likely to endear it to a charity that has defended our servicemen and women.

It has nowt to do with free speech. No one is saying the BNP cannot speak. What they are saying is that they don't want to hear it in their meeting rooms.

The BNP branches have tried in the past to be open when booking premises. However, so called anti-fascists (sic) infiltrate BNP branches like this one and then exert pressure on premises holders to stop the party exercising its democratic rights. This usually takes the form of publicising the meeting details from the "mole" and then telling their army of anti-democratic lefties to ring the premises and others to complain, some resorting to violent threats in the process. Understandably premises owners back off as they don't want their premises wrecked. I doubt very much if any veterans were involved and susepct it's the secretary being pressurized in such a manner and by the so called democratic MP Selous.

Bad things happen when good people do nothing. Andrew Selous is sitting in a safe Tory seat because the people of SW Beds do not get out and vote to change this. MPs work for you. At the General Election get out and let the polititians know who you want. I think the voices against the BNP prove that we know all polititians are not the same. It does matter who you vote for, make a difference, use your vote and make sure that the BNP and Andrew Selous do not get in. The country can not afford a Conservative Government remember the high interest rates of the last Tory government can you really afford your mortgage to go up that much. The BNP would be a disaster they are not a viable government voting BNP is not a message to anyone its a wasted vote.

There are families, who have lost a loved one in the recent conflicts, who vote BNP. Their scarifices are no less than the families of Tory voters, Labour voters etc.

Perhaps Ms Johnson could explain what she means by "We don't want those sort of people here." How exactly do these people differ from her? That statement sickens me.

The British Legion might also explain why they are discriminating against people who support the BNP. Members of the BNP are quite happy to donate to the poppy appeal etc. And the British Legion are quite happy to take their money.

No discrimination then.

Members of the BNP, look after their families, go to work, pay taxes, love their country and technically have the same rights as anyone else. I say technically, because in reallity they are denied them. No really.

Perhaps The British Legion, Ms Johnson and Tory MP Andrew Selous could remember, when they attend a memorial at the Cenotaph that it is, supposed to be, for all of our dead servicemen and women.

Not just the Tories/Labour and Liberals.

On the other hand. If I am wrong. Could they please say so?

Type "Royal British Legion BNP" into google, and what do you get?

A ton of news stories where the Royal British Legion QUITE CLEARLY say that they want NOTHING to do with the BNP...and yet the BNP, knowing this, go BEHIND THEIR BACK to try and rent their hall and then play the martyr when they get slung out..!?

I'm sure there are plenty of other meeting halls they could have rented, if they actually had ANY respect for the Royal British Legion, rather than just wanting to use them to look the martyr in the papers some more, they would have used one...pathetic...

ps, Mike Burns, you don't actually tell the person selling poppies who you vote for or anything else about yourself, it's an anonymous donation?

The people that Ms Johnson didn't want there are members of what is essentially a neo-nazi group that's trying to go repectable, because there's more money, publicity, and power in it than just going around beating up minorities and chucking bricks through windows.

Presumably these people sicken her, as they sicken a lot of others...

You see, this isn't just like being a labour supporter and not liking the tories, this is about a disgusting racist organisation that slags off non-white servicemen (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iraq/5336891/BNP-war-hero-Johnson-Beharry-only-got-medal-because-he-is-black.html), says that the holocaust didn't happen, and won't let you join unless you're white...

They may try and look respectable now in their cheap suits and ties, but they are still the same people that they were before, they just keep quiet about the stuff that makes them look bad...

The BNP has to sometimes book venues under an assumed name because if word gets out that they are there, so-called anti-fascists like UAF are likely to turn up and assault their members with clawhammers, like one did in Manchester last year. They aren't trying to "hoodwink" anyone; it's done to keep people safe.

This has got the UAF written all over it. They are cowards. Once they know a venue of any BNP meeting, they phone the proprietors and threaten them with exposure in the media, or failing that. they cause chaos and violence outside. This has nothing to do with soldiers, unless they have been ‘lent’ on. Most are in the BNP anyway. They accuse the BNP of being violent extremists without any evidence to back it up. ‘They’ are violent and extreme. They hate this country and the indigenous people in it. They are financed by Gordon Brown and the Unions, and backed by David Cameron. They fear BNP success in the General Election, that’s why they are trying to ban them.
