THE sun came out and so did the people – in their thousands.
The Leighton-Linslade Rotary Club May Fayre once again proved itself as the town's top day out for all the family and a credit to the small band of Rotarians, their family and friends who organise the annual charity fun day.

Top attraction in Parson's Close recreation ground this year was almost certainly the preliminary heat of the World's Strongest Man competition. Hosted by Extreme Fitness of Lake Street, Leighton, it drew large crowds of spectators throughout the day.

The donkey derby again proved popular as did the reverse bungee and the fun dog show.

The theme of the fayre was Sport in Leighton Buzzard and the LBO was there to promote our Give It A Go Campaign, offering people the chance to try their hand at a number of activities, including basketball, rowing and archery.

In the High Street, Tom Smith's fairground rides and sideshows attracted large queues of youngsters looking for fun and excitement, and fayre-goers looking for a bargain had scores of charity stalls to choose from, such as the All Saints' Preservation Trust selling off hundreds of unwanted Christmas gifts in Church Square.

Rotarian David Edwards said: "It was like the weather, absolutely brilliant.

"It was a bit like World War Two in that people were queueing for everything. We had to re-stock the barbecue two or three times and it took at least 10 minutes to get an ice cream.

"We would like to thank everyone who helped and especially all our sponsors, Wendy Fair Markets for the stalls and Three Counties Building Supplies for sponsoring the music and entertainment.

"I don't know yet how much money we have made for local charities, but it looks like being well up on last year.

"It was massive."

First to announce were Leighton Buzzard and District Archaeological and Historical Society, who raised £350 at their Pick-a-ticket stall. Mrs Joan Horne, who organised the stall, would like to thank the members for supplying the prizes and manning the stall, and the people of Leighton Buzzard for buying the tickets and making it a great success.

Video report coming this week.
