‘Action needed’ at Leighton Buzzard home care company


A Leighton Buzzard care company has been told that it must make a raft of improvements following an inspection last month.

Carebank Ltd, based at Collec Industrial Estate, provides personal care and support to people living in their own homes, with a range of care needs including dementia and physical disabilities.

Care Quality Commission inspectors made a routine announced visit to the company on April 3, 8 and 9– judging that there is ‘action needed’ in three of six required standards.

The provider was found not to be meeting standards with the management of patients’ medicine.

The CQC report stated: “People were not protected against the risks associated with medicines because the provider did not have appropriate arrangements in place to manage medicines.

“We found that a person had been prescribed for a course of antibiotic treatment. The doseand frequency prescribed had not been recorded on the MAR sheet.

“This meant that there was a potential risk that the prescribed medicine might not be administered appropriately.”

Concerns were also raised over the level of staff supervision.

The report said: “From the evidence made available to us on the day of our visit we found that supervision provided to staff was irregular.

“In the six staff files we examined we found no evidence to substantiate that staff had been provided with quarterly supervisions.”

Carebank Ltd was also told that action is needed in the assessment of its service provision.

Inspectors added: “People were not protected against the risks of inappropriate or unsafe care because there was no effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people received.”

Despite the concerns CQC inspectors ruled that all three areas brought “minor impact” to patients using Carebank Ltd.

The company was found to meet all required standards for the care and welfare of patients, safeguarding service users from abuse and for support of its own workers.

Carebank says it “apologises unreservedly” for the report.

Owner Colin Partridge said: “Our recent inspection by CQC has enabled us to identify and address areas of concern that previously we were unaware of.

“I am determined that going forward our services will exceed the minimum standards to support the people of Leighton Buzzard and surrounding areas.”
