Are you crafty enough for Leighton gift shop ?

Talented crafters given green signal to branch out into rail venue.

DO you have a track record for producing interesting arts and crafts ? If so you may be in line for display space at Leighton's only major tourist attraction.

The Craft Shop at the Narrow Gauge Railway is looking for talented home crafters who wish to find an outlet for their wares.

The brightly decorated shop, at the railway's northern terminus at the Stonehenge Works in Mile Tree Road, has been a favourite stopping off point for travellers for the past decade.

But there has been a sudden departure of craftsmen which has left the owners appealing for new talent to come on board.

Maggie Evans, who runs the club, said the idea of the shop was to provide interest to train travellers whose first love wasn't necessarily steam locos or sand quarrying.

"We really started it for the ladies who have no interest in trains but may be riding the narrow gauge with their families.

"We're at the other end of the line so people ride out, take a break and come and look around the shop.

"We give them something else to look at. We have a wide range of crafts on display and for sale and we sell refreshments.

"We've had jewellery, pottery, woodwork, pictures, sewing, gifts etc. Local crafters display their skills and one or two of us are on hand when the trains are running.

"But we recently lost our jeweller and a potter and a couple of other people said they were going to exhibit but they never turned up.

"We appreciate with the fuel crisis and money being tight that some craftsmen and women don't want to travel too far so we're hoping there may be some crafters in the Leighton area who would like to display and sell their products through us.

"We don't really want any more card-makers, which seems to be the in thing at the moment, but the more unusual the better."

The shop is open every Sunday from March to November, Saturdays from spring until autumn, and during school and bank holidays.

Anyone interested in exhibiting at the shop should call Maggie 01296 630225 or Leighton craftswoman Denise Tebbutt 01582 655384.
