Beat holiday boredom by riding a bike

Learn to ride your bike safely with the GoCycle team

BORED with the summer holidays already, kids?

Then why not dig out your bike, ask mum or dad for a fiver and learn to ride your cycle properly with Leighton-Linslade's GoCycle team.

There are a few places left for four- to nine-year-olds on the complete beginners and off-road control skills course which takes place every Monday morning (except the bank holiday) at Southcott Lower School, Bideford Green, Linslade. Each session costs 5 per trainee.

For nine- to 16-year-olds, Off Road Sports Cycling Skills could be right up your street.

The four-day course starts on Monday, August 17 and finishes on Thursday, August 20, (10am-12 noon) at Gilbert Inglefield Middle School, Leighton.

A Bikeability level two Road Riding Skills course is also open to nine - to 16-year-olds, on Friday, August 21, from 9.30am to 4pm. Bring your own lunch and drinks. It costs 15 for the day. The course starts and finishes at Gilbert Inglefield.

On Ya Bike for Year 8s upwards starts today (Tuesday) and runs until Thursday – it's aimed at ages 12 to 19. Each day, 11am to 4.30pm, the programme will include on-road cycle training to level three (advanced level), plus a bike ride and bike maintenance basic training, all with accredited Bikeability cycle instructors. Meet at Vandyke Youth Centre and bring your own packed lunch and drinks. Contact Allison Guiton, Vandyke Youth Club, for more details by emailing allison.guiton@bedscc.gov.uk

Adults needn't feel left out, either, GoCycle offers adult cycle training for all ages, all experience levels welcome.

Complete beginners, on-road confidence building and advanced level training is available daytimes, evenings and weekends to suit you. Two-hour sessions cost 15 per person.

One of the adult cycle trainees had training last Saturday morning and had a big impact on one participant, who said: "The training was brilliant and helped me alot. On Sunday, I went out on my first bike ride, I did a tour round Leighton, some off-road, some on-road. Did 14 miles – it was great."

GoCycle also offer bike maintenance courses, suitable for all ages and experience levels.
