Biker dog Barney creates a stir

For most nonagenarians putting their feet up and enjoying a cup of tea is excitement enough for one day.

One who breaks the mould– albeit in dog years– is Leighton Buzzard mutt Barney, who has become somewhat of a star around town.

Three months ago owner Paul Bradley, of Hydrus Drive, decided that the 13-year-old should enjoy his final years in style– riding shotgun on a Triumph motorbike.

After the purchase of a purpose made ventilated rucksack, a crash helmet and biker’s glasses Barney has become a regular sight on two wheels.

One bemused driver in Dunstable snapped Paul and Barney as they passed last week and posted the picture on the town’s ‘spotted’ Facebook page, which attracted more than 500 likes.

Paul told LBO: “The reaction has been great from most people, there have been lots taking photos and doing double takes as we pass.

“The funniest thing is when a child spots us and points it out to their parent, but they miss it.”

“I’ve set up a Facebook page for him so people can upload the pictures they take.

“It makes people smile and Barney really enjoys it, every time I say we are going out on the bike he wags his tail and follows quickly.”

Barney has also now become a regular down at biker meets at the Horse and Jockey, Dunstable.

Paul added: “He’s become a celebrity down there, everyone gathers round to take pictures of him.

“You get health and safety nuts commenting online but I’ve not had one person come up to me and say something negative, everyone has enjoyed it.

“I’d been thinking about getting one of the bags for a while and did it as he might only have a couple of years left.

“Within a few trips it was already worth it.”
