Bring your own food to this ‘wobbly’ pub!

One of Leighton Buzzard’s oldest pubs is relaunching this week with a new look.

The Black Lion in High Street is reopening with new owners who hope to provide a venue with something for everyone.

Gone is the pub’s pool table and televised live football replaced by a selection of real ales and cask ciders.

But the pub, which dates back to around 1676, has maintained its old fashioned charm with features such as its wooden beams remaining in place.

Licensee Nikki Garratt, who has moved to Leighton from the Midlands to run the pub, said: “We’re hoping to attract everyone from real ale fans to couples and families.

“We were only supposed to be closed for a few weeks but as it’s such an old building we’ve found all sorts of hidden treasures.

“The pub was a bit wobbly and we’ve kept it that way.”

Although the Black Lion won’t be serving a full menu of food, customers will be encouraged to bring their own packed lunch between noon and 3pm Monday to Friday.

Nikki is also in talks with Reubens sandwich shop to provide light snacks for those who don’t bring their own food.

And while customers can listen to music in one side of the pub, a separate room will be a quieter area for those who want to sit and talk.

Nikki also hopes to refurbish the garden in time for the better weather later this year.

The refurbished Black Lion opens its doors to representatives from Camra and suppliers for a test run tonight (January 29), and opens to the general public on Thursday (January 30).
