It’s now almost 50 years since Bobby Moore lifted the Jules Rimet trophy after the country’s footballers defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley on July 30, 1966.

And to commemorate landmark annniversary of the victory, Leighton Buzzard Brewing Company has produced a special ale.

Brewery owner Jon d’Este-Hoare said he’d decided to celebrate the “increasingly unlikely to be repeated achievement” of England winning a major tournament by producing ‘4-2’ – a golden-coloured brew, 4.2% in strength and using 100% English Goldings hops.

John explained that he had been delivering beer to The Local pub in Markyate and landlord Martin Dale had mentioned the 50th anniversary.

Jon said: “I had no idea and hadn’t even twigged it was a whole 50 years ago – although I was well aware of the pain of supporting England, with my earliest football memory being Maradona’s handball in 1986 and of course continuing to our pathetic appearance in France this summer.

“The landlord is planning a fantastic day at his pub for the 30th with the match being played at 3pm as if on the day to enable us younger folk to finally feel like England have won something and the older guys to relive a sadly, likely once-in-a-lifetime-achievement.” He added: “I am always looking for new ideas for beers so this sounded like a great opportunity to raise awareness of the important anniversary and remind drinkers of something positive for English football after our ‘performance’ this summer.”

‘4-2’ will be available at the next open day at the brewery’s Harmill Industrial Estate base on July 23, as well as at local pubs.
