They say never work with animals, but a new bulk buy wine retailer in Leighton Buzzard has broken that rule from the outset!
Majestic Wine launched its 206th store in Leighton Road on Friday morning. But instead of the customary invite for the mayor to do the honours, some keen canines turned out as VIP guests.
Majestic’s charity of the year is Dogs for the Disabled. And for the grand opening two of their dogs were in attendance Suzie, and aptly-named puppy Shiraz.
Suzie took centre stage as she pulled the ribbon on the new branch before customers were invited in to view the 800-plus wines and champagnes on offer.
Approval for the store, in a unit no longer required by Jewson, was granted in June last year. The site falls in the Bridge Meadows development brief which was adopted by Central Beds Council last year, so Majestic has only been granted a 10-year permission to avoid prejudicing the proposed scheme.
On applying to set up the store, the company stated: “It allows time to establish the business and potentially the opportunity to relocate within the wider redevelopment of the site or elsewhere in town if necessary.
“Furthermore it would ensure the site was brought back into active uses in the short/medium term, improving the visual appearance of the area and allowing for some inward investment to the benefit of both the immediate area and wider Leighton Buzzard economy.”
The company says it would anticipate between 23-28 transactions to be made daily through the proposed Leighton site.
With the emphasis on its business being bulk buying, the average amount spent by a customer is £125, equating to 17 bottles of wine.
Majestic have a special tasting weekend on April 11-13 to celebrate its arrival. Pop into the store and join the team for a free glass of fizz and a selection of nibbles!
