Circus story without a safety net

OPIUM, acrobatics and backgammon – an interesting combination that would certainly make for a strange evening. And they’re all part of a stunning new circus at the Hat Factory in Luton.

Fortunately, audience members aren’t required to take part in any of the activities themselves, so you can sit back and enjoy the emotional drama, the daring performances and breathtaking acrobatics without worrying about your health and safety or criminal record.

Backgammon For Beginners tells the story of an Iranian man who arrives in London on a military jet plane in November 1976.

Unknown to airport officials, he has smuggled the last of his opium supply with him.

Via the mediums of drama, acrobatics, live music and puppetry, the show follows the Iranian in his attempts to comprehend the differences between his past and his present.

He finds himself jumping out of hotel windows, introducing backgammon to London bars, facing the terror of the National Front and stopping trains with his bare hands.

So & So Circus company tell the true story of this extraordinary man and his life lived without a safety net. On Thursday, May 31 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £9 each, £7 for concessions, £5 with a Culture Card or only £2 for under 26s; plus, there’s a pre-theatre meal for only £6 at the Hat Factory Kitchen cafe.

To book tickets or for more information, call the box office on 01582 878100 or go to www.thehatfactory.org.
