All Saints Coffee shop will celebrate it’s 25th anniversary on Bank Holiday Monday (May 5).

The Bishop of Bedford, the Rt Rev Richard Atkinson will be attending to mark the occasion– and it’s rumoured that he will be serving behind the counter at some point!

The coffee shop opened on May 1, 1989 and has been a lively meeting place ever since. It was created during the rebuilding of the church following the disastrous fire of April 13, 1985.

Volunteer Judith Cundell said: “The coffee shop is manned entirely by volunteers, and has blossomed as the years have passed. In the early days, there were just two people on each shift of two hours. Filled rolls had been prepared earlier, and frequently ran out.

“Later, soup was added to the menu, but we had only six bowls and spoons, and just hoped we would manage.

“Now, there are three to four people on each shift, all cakes are home made and all other food is made to order.

“We aim to provide a pleasant and friendly meeting place for visitors to have light refreshments, to meet their friends and perhaps make new ones.”

The Coffee Shop is open on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 3.30pm.
