A Leighton teenager is holding a car boot sale on Saturday (August 2) to raise funds ahead of a mission to an orphanage in Malawi next summer.

Megan Desmond, 14, attends Vandyke Upper and is one of a group of students signed up to the World Challenge project.

The expedition is 3-4 weeks long and will involve numerous arduous activities aimed at building teamwork, communication, life skills and personal development. They will ultimately be volunteering at an orphanage sponsored by Vandyke.

As part of her fundraising challenge, Megan, of Willow Bank Walk, has arranged the car boot sale which is being sponsored by Pecks Farm Shop and Eggington Dairy, who are allowing her the use of their field opposite the farm shop. Pecks are also providing a BBQ on the day.

Megan’s mum Sue said: “Megan has to raise £3,000 to fund her expedition. So far she has taken part in a boot sale, selling old clothes, shoes and whatever else hasn’t been nailed down!

“She has raised money by doing a cake sale, a sweet shop at her swimming club, and had two very successful ‘Teddy Raffles’ with a friend at both the May Day Fayre and recent carnival. She has also collected clothes through the recycling company ‘Bags 2 School’ and done some bag packing at a local supermarket.”

Further fundraising ideas are in the pipeline, both individually, and also with the seven other Vandyke students taking part in this expedition.

For the World Challenge trip, students have to ‘take ownership’ of the project from start to finish – fundraising, budgeting, planning routes, expeditions and the work they propose to do.

They have to plan accommodation, transport and food and are fully supported along the way. Further details can be found at world-challenge.co.uk.

Megan said: “I want to do the World Challenge as it would be a great experience and an opportunity to enhance my CV. I hope it will help me stand out and help me to get a job and go on to university.

“I am one of the youngest Challengers, but I wanted to do it now, so that I can then concentrate on my GCSE and A-level studies.”

> The car boot sale at Leighton Road, Eggington (opposite Pecks Farm Shop) takes place between 9am - 2pm (8am for sellers) on Saturday. Sellers £5 per car, £10 for a van. Entry is 20p per person.
