There must have been raised eyebrows among Wing residents when they saw a bunch of teenagers apparently bricklaying at the new Woodlands development in the village.

But the youngsters from Buckinghamshire University Technical College were simply getting a lesson on the building industry from staff at construction company Taylor Wimpey.

Their visit included a site briefing and induction, followed by a tour of the work with site manager Robert Wilson who explained the process.

The students had a go at bricklaying as well as finding out about the adminstrative side of the job.

Taylor Wimpey is an employer-partner of Bucks UTC which offers 14- to 19-year-olds the opportunity to study a unique blend of core curriculum subjects together with technical and practical elements which work towards careers in construction or IT.

The visit was part of Year 9’s ongoing induction programme, which included designing a computer game with a construction theme over a five-week period.

Bucks UTC’s head of construction Nick Han said: “A visit like this – where the students can see first hand what happens on site – is absolutely crucial as they start off with very little knowledge of construction.”
He added: “As well as hosting site visits, Taylor Wimpey have supplied all the workwear the students use for practical sessions and their staff have come in to give lectures and presentations.

“They provide lots of current industry knowledge which is literally invaluable.”

The Woodlands development is located off Dormer Avenue and comprises a selection of three- and four-bedroom houses with prices starting at £337,500.
