The Leighton Buzzard-based charity laid on family activities and games including a bouncy castle, tombola and frisbee golf, as well as football drills and skills run by Woodside Football Club.

But the highlight of the day was the Battle of the Supermarkets football match as teams from Morrisons and Tesco in the town took on each other in a 90 minute match.

Tesco scored the first goal after 30 minutes and although Morrisons fought back, Tesco triumphed in the end 3-1.

Their spokesman Charlie Furlong said: “It was amazing to see so many different parts of the community come together for a great cause, not to mention both teams having great fun in the process.”

Morrisons community champion Katharine Smith added: “I was so pleased to see how well natured it was, in spite of playing again our rival supermarket.

“And special thanks to the Morrisons team – we may have lost the match but we helped raise more than £1,000 for KidsOut.”

Local band Blues Before Midnight serenaded the crowds after the game.

KidsOut spokeswoman Suzanne Taylor said: “Equally as important as the fundraising, the event enabled us to reach a new audience.”

The next fundraising event is a quiz night on Friday, September 16 at Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club, Tickets are £15 each and should be booked in advance.
