A Leighton man is organising a charity bike ride to raise money in honour of a friend and colleague who died aged just 25.

Colin Harding, 47 will be saddling up in September for the John O’ Groats to Land’s End challenge in aid of CRY (Cardiac Risk for the Young).

He will be joined by four of his colleagues from Network Rail; Janine Dinsdale, 44, Paul Bladon, 33, Kevin Matthews, 55 and Fi Underwood, 24 – who all live in the Leighton Buzzard area.

During the challenge they will be thinking of Fay Howell, from Wolverton, a section supervisor for Network Rail who died in March of sudden adult death syndrome.

Colin, of North Street, said: “Fay was a young woman with a bright future ahead of her. She was the kind of person who had a real zest for life; she was always involved in one thing or another.”

“I think if Fay was still around today she would have been the first person to sign up and come along for the ride, that’s the kind of person she was.”

Fay was both a drummer in a popular rock band Roses and Pirates and a midfielder for the Luton Town Ladies.

Colin added: “She will be remembered by all her friends and colleagues for her hard work, dedication and talent.”

Colin is an experienced fundraiser.

He has run several marathons in the past but has never attempted anything like this before.

“As a group we are looking forward to the challenge,”he said. “We are all starting to put in the miles to build up the stamina.”

Colin hopes that the 603-mile charity bike ride will help raise awareness.

He said: “We want to let people know that there is support and help out there should the unexpected happen.

“No-one wants a young person to die but unfortunately it happens and the support that can be given can make a huge difference to the surviving members of the families.”
