There were a few tears this week when the staff at Leighton’s Co-Op Travel said goodbye to their loyal customers.

The shop, in Waterborne Walk actually closed for business yesterday (Monday) after a nine-month fight to find new owners.

But the five staff, led by manager Hayley White, threw out an open invitation on Saturday to regulars to drop by for a drink, nibbles and chat.

The shop has been a travel agents for more than 20 years and is one of the company’s top performing stores.

But they heard in March that its future, along with some other branches in the country, were in doubt.

Travel associate Tanya Billingham said: “It’s been going on for so long. We thought that we had been saved but then heard two weeks ago that it had all fallen through.

“Thankfully we have all found jobs with other branches so we’re all starting new chapters in our lives.

“We’d like to say a big thank-you to our customers who have become great friends over the years.”

The closure, along with Blockbuster on Saturday leaves Waterborne Walk with another two empty units .
