Four mums have proved themselves to be the fourth finest ladies barbershop quartet in the world.
Finesse ladies barbershop quartet, with Helen Owen from Cheddington, Beth Brimmicombe from Pitstone, Nicky Salt from Biggleswade, Tanya Jenkins from Flitwick consolidated their position as Britain’s best when they first triumphed over the current UK and European champions in competition at Llandudno in October.
The quartet then flew the 8,000 miles to Honolulu, Hawaii, to take part in the Sweet Adelines International competition – the world championships.
The Sweet Adelines International has a membership of 24,000 women singers from all around the world, with more than 1,200 quartets registered and eligible to take part in the annual competition.
The four working mums (who have to fit rehearsals around husbands, nine children, four jobs and three dogs) performed to an audience of several thousand delegates at the Hawaii Convention Center with an eclectic mix of ballads, show songs, up-tempo numbers and comedy to gain fourth place.
They were pipped to a bronze medal by one point in 2,700 – but nevertheless it was the highest place ever gained by a British quartet.
Indeed, before Finesse no other British quartet had gained a place in the top 10 in the world.
“Had they not incurred penalty points for exceeding their time limit by a few seconds they would have achieved third place,” said a spokesman for the group.
“The only reason they incurred the time faults was because the applause went on and on, and the audience laughed for too long at Nicky’s jokes!”
On their return, after shaking off the jet-lag, the fabulous four will be hosting a Christmas show in Pitstone Memorial Hall on Saturday (December 14) at 7.30pm with guests including top male barbershop quartet Portobello Road, and the Cheddy Boys comedy duo.
Tickets are priced at £7.50 (£5 concessions) and are available from Helen Owen on 01296 661817 or 07810 765981 or email@example.com.
