Walk on blind-side

Alicia Wright from Timperley not only intends completing the 180 miles between London and Manchester in 10 days, but she’ll be doing it blindfold with her parents as guides.

And she’s determined to reach her £5,000 target.

It’s not the first time the tenacious youngster has taken part in such a tough event.

Last year she walked from Blackpool to Trafford, similarly blindfolded, covering 60 miles in three days.

Alicia is doing the challenge to raise money for Henshaws, a north of England charity that provides expert care, advice and training to those affected by sight loss and a range of other disabiities.

Henshaws also works with their family, friends and colleagues.

Alicia’s mum Lisa, a legal executive, said: “My daughter has always been a very caring, conscientious person who is passonate about helping others, so we weren’t at all surprised when she told us she wanted to help raise money for charity.

“I don’t think any of us realised just how tough it would be last time but it’s amazing the motivation you generate when you know it’s for a good cause.”

Alicia will be led by Lisa, with dad Phil following behind in the family car.

Their 10 day trek will start at Wembley stadium via Bedfordshire – they’ll be in Leighton Buzzard on Saturday, May 28 and will be staying at The Swan – and end at Henshaws in Old Trafford.

A 19-year-old who’s a service user at the charity said: “Alicia is an inspiration to us all. It’s wonderful to know there are people like her, giving up their time to do such a great thing. What she achieves will literally change the lives of others.”
