Adult language are back on the timetable at Leighton Buzzard Library after a call from disappointed mature students.
Central Beds Council axed the “leisure and pleasure” courses in a cost saving move but they have now been rescued.
Beds Leisure Learning, based in Bedford has stepped in to save the day and the movwe has been welcomed by the town’s adult students.
The course are offered across the county and form a new ‘not for profit’ Community Interest Company.
Initially courses in German and Spanish for beginners to advance were planned but have already expanded to include French and Italian.
Many arts and crafts courses are also being taught at the Bedford centre
Pauline Wolfenden, a tutor of German, was previously curriculum manager for languages with Beds Adult Skills and Community Learning.
She has organised the language programme and also trained and supported tutors .
She said: “I am really pleased that we have the opportunity through this new venture to continue to offer language learning in the county.
“Learning a language can be beneficial for many reasons as it’s not just a question of being able to communicate when abroad; although this aspect can make for trips much more enjoyable.
“It gives insight into the culture of other countries. If you deal with business colleagues even a rudimentary knowledge of their language will be appreciated and can raise your confidence .”
“It can provide a very pleasant evening among other like-minded people. I look forward to seeing our offer in languages and other subjects expand in the future’.
