Warning about telephone scams

The public is being asked to be vigilant and to never give personal details or bank details over the phone after a series of telephone scams committed throughout Bedfordshire with the offenders claiming to be from the police.

The latest incident was reported on Wednesday when a man claiming to be a PCSO called the victim asking for money in relation to a magazine that was going to be published with regards to anti-social behaviour initiatives.

The caller intimidated the victim by stating he would not get any police assistance if he didn’t hand over the cash.

A Beds Police spokesman said: “We are urging people to be alert and help us by educating vulnerable members of the public who may be victim to this kind of offence. While Bedfordshire Police has successfully convicted offenders of this type of fraud, further offences continue.

“Please be assured the police would never contact you in this manner and you should never give money to unknown callers over the phone. If you or your friends or family do get called in this manner please call 101.

“Remember to use a mobile phone, friend’s phone or wait at least five minutes before calling to ensure you aren’t reconnected to the offender.”
