The Canal River Trust are planning to replace a leaky gate at the Cooks Wharf area of the Grand Union Canal, after it drained for the second time in four months.

The area sits just outside Cheddington on the way to Marsworth. In August there was a similar scene after a boater left a lock gate paddle open, the gates control the flow of water in the lock.

A spokesperson for the Canal River Trust said: “This part of the canal is susceptible to draining as there is a slight leak with the lock gates so they are not as water tight as they should be.

“The good news is that in the next few weeks we are planning to come and replace the leaky gate so hopefully this should not happen again.”

Reader Julian Williams was surprised when he stumbled across the drained section on Monday, December 28.

He said: “I was walking along and thought the canal looked a bit strange, it was almost completely drained.

“I looked online and the picture I saw on the LBO’s website from August was pretty much the same image as the one I took.

“It is strange that the same place has drained in a matter of months.”
