Frank Bruno stars at fundraiser for tragic Leighton fire family

Boxing champ is knock-out special guest at Meadow Way fun day this weekend.

A HUGE fun day is planned this Sunday, starting 12 noon, at Meadow Way to help raise funds for the Atkinson family whose little girl died in a fire at their home in May.

The community of Meadow Way have rallied around to bring support and help to the Atkinson's following the death of four-year-old Aaliyah on May 21.

The new family home has been painted and decorated by Meadow Way neighbours and friends. The same caring individuals - as well as the wider community from Leighton Buzzard - have also donated furniture, curtains, clothes and toys. Even new carpets were generously donated by a local carpet company.

The four women who initiated the help - Gina Macdonald, Stephanie Coll, Nicky John and Caroline Wallis have worked tirelessly along with others to raise money and give help to the family.

Aaliyah's father, Carl Atkinson wanted it to be known to everyone who has helped, that he and his family are extremely grateful.

The community has been imaginative with their efforts to raise money including a fancy dress walk by Sam MacDonald and friends which raised 184, a sponsored leg waxing, a pyjama walk and a portrait painted by Robert Mitchell of Frank Bruno.

A trust fund is being set up for the Atkinson children and all money raised from the fun day on July 5, plus monies donated by individuals and from the many events, will go into the fund.

Businesses, shops, farmers, councillors, police and the fire brigade have responded to the crisis by giving in many ways: People involved include: Malcolm Cobley for his tireless support and 50 cash prize for the raffle; VST for making stocks and boards.

John Frazier from Bridlington Farm for the succulent pig roast; Mini Clipper for supplying lorry plus 200 cheque; Pearces for supplying lorry; Yirrels for the 200 sausages; Daniel from Strattons for supplying the barbecue and cooking the burgers; Colin, Linda and fellow puppeteers from Hope Puppets for the puppet show; Frank Bruno and Leighton mayor, Karen Cursons for their support; Adam Fahn for rolling up his sleeves!
