Going the extra mile for Sport Relief!

Leighton’s Parson’s Close Recreation Ground was alive with the sound of more than 200 pairs of pounding feet on Sunday for the Sport Relief ‘Leighton Mile’.

The crowd of happy and enthusiastic runners of all ages joined in the fun, many in fancy dress and all determined to have a lot of fun.

The carnival atmosphere kicked off with a pre-race warm-up by Leighton’s very own Mr Motivator, Martin Walker, who delighted the crowd with his unique version of Gangnam Style.

Organised by Leighton Fun Runners, the 10K and 5K races followed a route around Parson’s Close and Tiddenfoot Waterside Park, while the larger one-mile group completed two laps of Parson’s Close Park, completing just over one mile.

The younger children delighted in racing their parents across the finish line to rapturous applause from the many entertained spectators and race marshals.

A spokesman for the Fur Runners said: “For some runners this was their first race and their first running medal, for everyone this was a great morning’s racing and a lot of fun.”

In 2012 the ‘Leighton Mile’ raised just over £5,000 for Sport Relief. Leighton Fun Runners are optimistic that this figure will be exceeded in 2014.
