Increase in quarry lorry movements approved

The number of lorries travelling to and from a quarry in Heath and Reach each day will increase from 110 to 150.

Arnold White Estates are filling in Stone Lane Quarry to raise the land to pre-extraction levels before it is re-landscaped.

They sought permission from Central Bedfordshire Council to speed up the process by sending more vehicles to visit the site to deposit material and fill the pit.

The proposal was approved despite objections from Heath and Reach Parish Council, who asked for a number of amendments to be made. These included improving the mechanical cleaning of Woburn Road, which connects the quarry to the A5, and dropping the speed limit on the same road to 40mph.

Lorries will now wait one minute to drip after going through wheel wash facilities before leaving the site, but otherwise the plans were passed unchanged.

The vehicles are not permitted to turn left out of the quarry and enter the village itself
