It's going to be a great carnival!
LEIGHTON'S carnival could be the best ever!
THE Leighton-Linslade Carnival is only days away and a number of games, stalls and attractions have just been announced, which look set to make this year's event one of the best ever.
The carnival committee hopes the whole town will get behind this year's carnival.
You might want to celebrate the success of the cycling forum in making Leighton-Linslade a cycling town and wave them along the parade route, or show your support for the charities and organisations who will be riding on the back of floats in the parade.
Anyone who wishes to put balloons, banners or bunting outside their houses in a show of support for the town is encouraged to do so.
Entries into the procession so far include: Leighton Buzzard Brownies, Brooklands Residents' Association Leighton Buzzard Drama Groupd, Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club as well as the Leighton-Linslade Cycling Forum among many others. The winners will be judged on which float best represents this year's theme 'Wish you were here/Your dream holiday'.
The parade will depart from Cedars at noon and the route will take in: Wing Road, Leighton Road, West Street, Hockliffe Road, Brooklands Drive (where they will have a 10 minute break), Brooklands Avenue, Stanbridge Road (where judges will be located outside The Falcon pub), then into Lake Street, Grove Road and finally into the park, where the winners will be announced.
Residents in all of these areas are advised to keep the roads clear, allowing easy passage for the floats and on-foot entrants.
* If you have a keen eye for picking a winner, why not reserve yourself a duck for the Town Mayor's duck race?
The race doesn't happen until next year, but the mayor wants to raise as much money as possible so get your entries in early.
You can reserve your numbered duck at the mayor's stall in the rec on carnival day. Each duck only costs 1 and proceeds will go to the Mayor's chosen charities: Macmillan Nurses and Kids Out.
*One group who certainly hope to make this year's carnival flipping brilliant are the Harlequin School of Gymnastics.
They are planning a sponsored tumble, spending half an hour tumbling up and down a 40ft inflatable tumble track, set up in the carnival's main display area. The group hope to raise a total of 3,000 from their afternoon's tumbling and with British U11 tumbling champion Maja Austen taking part they are bound to be a flipping great success!
Sparx Theatre Company will also be putting on a short performance in the main arena, previewing their coming show 'Lost in Storyland'.
Sparx is a charity which uses the medium of stage to help disabled people develop confidence and skills as well as experiences they may not have previously had. They are hoping to raise money to fund future productions and workshops, as well as promote their show on July 19 at the Library Theatre.
Go Bowling Dunstable will bowl the crowds over with their outdoor bowling lane, one of the biggest draws of last year's carnival.The lane will be located by the quad bikes and children's rides near the playground and is almost certain to be one of the most popular attractions of the day.
The schedule for the day so far is as follows:
1pm – a demonstration by Body Rhythm Line Dancers.
1.30pm – the Sparx performance.
2pm – a photo opportunity with Shaggy.
2.15pm – the Harlequins' sponsored tumble.
2.45pm – fancy dress and awards.
3pm – toddler time.
3.30pm – a show by the Ice Gems cheerleading group.
4pm – a drum circle demonstration.
4.30 to 5pm – a drum circle workshop.
Programmes are now on sale from Greenways in North Street as well as the Harpenden Building Society, Mama Loves Boo, F1 Tyre and Exhaust Centre, Card Experience and Dillamores. Each programme includes a minimum donation of 50p but larger donations are welcome.
Programmes contains a prize draw entry form, with a 25 prize for the winner and a charity nomination form so you can nominate a charity to recieve a donation from the carnival. For more information visit www.llcarnival.org.uk.
