Plans for a housing development which would increase the population of Ivinghoe by almost a third are ‘completely disproportionate’, according to villagers.

Chesire-based Gladman Developments Ltd submitted an outline planning application to build 70 homes on land off Station Road in June, with a decision set to be made by Aylesbury Vale District Council’s planning committee in the coming weeks.

The scheme has been widely opposed by a number of villagers who have formed a campaign group, Ivinghoe Together, to help defeat the application.

Their cause has been assisted by Buckingham MP and Speaker of the House John Bercow, who has written to the councilto register his concerns over the plan.

In a letter he wrote: “I am of the opinion that Ivinghoe does not have the general amenities available to support the predicted population increase of approximately 170.

He added that the development would “ruin the character of the historic centre of the village.”

Ivinghoe Together chair Andrew Dicker shared Mr Bercow’s concerns, telling LBO that the development would have a significant impact on the village.

He said: “This application is disproportionate and would be harmful to the village and its environment.

“A historical view north to Cheddington and Mentmore would be ruined, while it would also threaten 19 listed buildings within a conservation area which adjacent to the site.

“There also aren’t the facilities in the village to sustain the development, especially when it would increase the community by 30 per cent.”

“It would be detrimental to the quality of life in Ivinghoe.”

In a planning statement submitted by the applicant it is countered that the village “has a high level of community and services facilities” and a “good level of service provision for day to day shopping.”
