The treacherous weather may have stopped many workers from reaching their day job, but for staff at Appledown Kennels, their furry charges need them more than ever.
Freezing temperatures don't deter people from abandoning dogs, and the Eaton Bray shelter is bursting at the seams after the festive period.
The charity, which takes in stray dogs as well as abandoned animals, has seen Staffordshire Bull Terriers, a lurcher, a cross-bred spaniel, a Rottweiler, two pitbull terriers, a bulldog and a tiny Staffy puppy arrive in the past two weeks.
Kennel hand Andi Horwood said: "Unfortunately, it is common all year round but we get a lot at Christmas and in the school holidays when people don't want to pay to put them in kennels.
"The dogs don't know it is Christmas but it is a hell of a lot colder at this time of year for those who are abandoned."
Two-year-old Jefferson is Appledown's longest serving visitor, after arriving at the shelter in March last year.
He is described by staff as "a real gentleman" and can be walked with other dogs. Jefferson is great with both adults and children so would make a perfect family pet.
Little Peanut, aged three, is a lively character.
He loves lots of walks and would suit an active family. He is happy with other dogs but would not live with a cat.
And one-year-old Jarvis needs a home without children, as youngsters can scare him.
He gets on very well with other dogs and has just started agility training.
