Leighton Road Surgery closed today after death of GP

Leighton Buzzard GPs have paid tribute to a partner from Leighton Road Surgery today following the news of his death.

Well-liked by patients and GPs alike, Dr Tariq Hafez, 49, was regarded by many as an innovator in the profession – keen to find new ways to improve patient care and engaging in the development of new projects.

He studied medicine in Cairo and joined Leighton Road Surgery in Leighton Buzzard in 2008.

Dr Hafez passed away in his native Egypt after a short and brave battle with cancer.

In a tribute to his colleague, Dr Chris Marshall from Salisbury House Surgery said: “The death of Tariq Hafez is a tragedy for Leighton Road Surgery and a great loss for Leighton Buzzard.

“Tariq had been an integral leading part of his surgery for a large number of years, pushing forward with innovative ideas and projects in an effort to improve the quality of care for his patients and alter the way care could be delivered in better ways for the whole of the town.“

“He knew he had a very serious illness but always held out to return to work, as this was his drive and his desire to serve his patients. His illness did not let him have any respite but he bore it with great fortitude. My thoughts and condolences go out to his wife, children and family, and this includes his greater family of work colleagues, staff and patients of Leighton Road Surgery. I will miss him.”

In a mark of respect, Leighton Road Surgery will be closed on the afternoon of Wednesday 1 March. GPs from Salisbury House Surgery have agreed to see patients from Leighton Road Surgery to ensure there is a continuity of care during this difficult time.

The practice will re-open as usual on Thursday 2 March.

Dr Tariq Hafez is survived by his wife and three young children
