A dispute over a much-loved green space has turned up a notch as a local campaign group rushes to organise a last minute-bid to buy the land.
The Paddocks in Linslade has been the focus of several battles between developers and the local community.
After two failed planning applications to build on the site – including failed appeals to the Planning Inspectorate – owners Taylor Wimpey are auctioning off The Paddocks to the highest bidder.
Campaigner Victoria Waple, of Hands Off Our Green, said: “We’re just absolutely devastated, there’s been tears from residents. While the lot has gone to auction, they’ve marketed it as a lovely green space with all these amenities, they haven’t mentioned the two planning applications and all the ground rules in place.
“What we’re trying to do is find a way to purchase it ourselves.”
The site goes to auction on July 16, giving the campaigners limited time to organise their own bid to buy the land.
They have been supported in their efforts by Leighton-Linslade Town Council, Central Beds Council and MP Andrew Selous.
Mrs Waple added: “If anyone is willing to offer any legal advice, we’d be grateful!”
