Academy turns out coaches in everything!

Cedars Upper School holds courses

HALF-Term is usually a time for putting your feet up and relaxing. Not so at Cedars Upper School in Linslade.

The school in Mentmore Road was the venue for the second annual Cedars Coaching Academy – 10 days, 25 sports and 35 courses involving prospective coaches and referees from all corners of the UK.

Last October, a modest nine sports were made available in the pilot academy. This year's academy has expanded to be three times bigger, longer and more diverse.

Coaching certification was on offer in all of the main sports, such as football, rugby, cricket, badminton and tennis, and also in some more unusual activities such as angling, martial arts, rock-climbing, windsurfing and snowboarding. Add to the list refereeing, first aid and racquet stringing and there really was something for everyone.

The academy is thought to be the only venture of its kind in the UK and perhaps even the world.

As a result it has attracted a lot of interest from organisations such as The Youth Sport Trust, Sport England and Team Beds & Luton, culminating in a prestigious VIP visit to see the academy in action on Tuesday.

Spokesman Lee Beaumont said: "Many local young people took advantage of this opportunity again this year to add to the number of qualified coaches already in place after last year's event. This bodes extremely way for local sport at all levels."
