A Leighton karate coach is back from China following a month’s training with 34th generation Shaolin monks.

Jo Randall, 37, is the sensei at the English Contact Karate Association’s Leighton Buzzard club at Leighton Middle School.

She is a 2nd dan black belt and flew out to test and hone her skills in Qufu, around 300 miles south of Beijing.

Jo was taught by several Shaolin masters during her stay. She said: “I went for a glimpse into Chinese martial arts and further strengthen my discipline of mind and experience a different art to my main passion karate, which is Japanese.

“So, I spent a month in Qufu Shaolin Kung Fu school training with a 34th generation Shaolin Monk. The training was six hours a day starting at 6am running, tai chi, power stretching, Sanda, wing chun, Kung Fu, Qi Gong and conditioning. Power training also involved going head first down temple stairs, carrying people on my shoulders, races up sheer rock faces.

“I have come back bruised and challenged, it was a brilliant adventure and now look forward to returning to my dojo at ECKA Leighton Buzzard, where I have run a successful karate and kickboxing club out of Leighton Middle for the past five years.”

Jo is launching a beginners kickboxing and karate course on Monday, July 7.

Places (£15) must be prebooked by emailing jokarate@hotmail.co.uk or calling 07768613538.
