Burglary victims fork out for raids
POLICE are urging residents to lock up their garden tools after thieves used garden equipment to break into homes in Leighton.
Two houses were broken into between 10am and 7.30pm on Monday and Wednesday after thieves used a garden spade and a pair of garden shears found in the gardens.
The intruders managed to jemmy open a rear window at a house in Baker Street on Wednesday and fled with a TV.
Two days earlier, in Firs Path, a laptop was stolen from a house when a conservatory window was forced open with a spade.
DS Mepstead, of the priority crime investigation team, is warning residents to ensure all tools are out of sight and securely locked away.
“They appear to be opportunist thieves where the offender has used a garden tool that had been left out to gain entry to the property. Do not make it easy for thieves to get into your home,” he said.
“Ensure doors are double locked, windows are secure, side gates are bolted and security lighting is in working order. Ensure there is nothing in your garden that could be used to force patio doors or windows, such as garden spades or other tools. If you are going out at night, leave a light on and the radio tuned to a talk radio station.”
Anyone with information relating to the incidents is urged to contact Beds Police, in confidence, on 101, text information to 07786 200011, call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111, or online at crimestoppers-uk.org.
